Route 1 & 9 resurfacing project begins
in Elizabeth and Newark

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced the start of a project to resurface two miles of Route 1 & 9 in both directions from North Avenue in Elizabeth City to Haynes Avenue in Newark City.

“Resurfacing projects are a priority for the Department because they improve public safety and help maintain our roadways in a state of good repair,” NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson said.

NJDOT’s contractor, Della Pello Paving, is scheduled to begin mainline resurfacing operations next week. Work requiring lane closures will be performed at night in order to minimize traffic impacts on Route 1 & 9. All travel lanes will be maintained during daytime hours, though traffic shifts may be necessary.

The $6.3 million project will provide full-depth concrete repairs and mill and resurface Route 1 & 9 in both directions with a new surface course of asphalt pavement between mileposts 45.5 and 47.6. This stretch of highway carries more than 100,000 vehicles on a daily basis. These pavement repairs are necessary to restore the highways operating condition and provide optimal safety for motorists.

NJDOT will also make surface repairs to the on/off ramps along the highway. Upgraded curbing, drainage, and roadway striping will be provided throughout the project limits, along with new rumble strips and pavement markers. The project is scheduled for completion this winter.

The work is being coordinated with the Port Authority of NY/NJ so as to minimize the impact for motorists headed to Newark Liberty International Airport.

Variable message and construction signs will provide motorists with advance notification of construction activities. Motorists are also encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
