Maintenance repairs announced on Route 21 southbound viaduct in Newark
Route 21 southbound to be closed over eight weekend periods

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced that maintenance repairs are scheduled to begin next week on the Route 21 (McCarter Highway) southbound viaduct in Newark.

On Monday, August 15, NJDOT’s bridge maintenance contractor, I.E.W., is scheduled to begin high-priority repairs to the concrete bridge pier caps on the viaduct that carries the Route 21 southbound travel lanes over Route 21 northbound. The right lane of Route 21 northbound will be closed permanently to traffic at this location for approximately eight weeks. Two travel lanes will be maintained northbound at all times.

The work will require that Route 21 southbound be fully closed to traffic between Exit 4 (Chester Avenue) and 3rd Avenue over a period of eight consecutive weekends. The weekend closures are scheduled to begin Friday, August 19 with the roadway closed to traffic between 10 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. Monday each weekend. The left and center lanes will be closed a half-mile north to help funnel traffic to the right for the detour at Exit 4.

• During the weekend closures all Route 21 southbound motorists will be detoured at Exit 4 (Chester Avenue) to Broadway south to 3rd Avenue back to Route 21 southbound.

Route 21 southbound will remain open to traffic during the work week.

Variable message signs will be utilized to provide advance warning of the closures. The work and resulting traffic pattern changes have been coordinated with Newark officials.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org real-time travel information.
