New stage of construction begins on Route 206 bridge in Montgomery

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that the ongoing Route 206 Bridge over CSX railroad tracks replacement project has entered a new stage of construction in Montgomery Township.

The implementation of the new construction stage has necessitated a series of traffic pattern changes around the vicinity of the bridge, and at the intersections to the immediate north and south of the structure.

Earlier this week, NJDOT’s contractor, Ritacco Construction, opened the new Route 206 bridge on a limited basis, to serve as a temporary connection for CR 601 (Trent Avenue) eastbound motorists headed to Route 206.

• CR 601 eastbound motorists are now being diverted onto the new bridge over the railroad tracks to the new alignment of Pike Run Road to access Route 206 in either direction.

The Route 206 southbound connection to CR 601 westbound has also been closed, north of the bridge and Route 206 northbound will now use a different route to access CR 601.

• Route 206 southbound motorists destined for CR 601 will now continue on existing Route 206 over the old bridge to Pike Run Road, take the newly built section of Pike Run Road to the new Route 206 bridge to connect to CR 601.

• Route 206 northbound motorists destined for CR 601 will now use the reconfigured Pike Run Road intersection to make a left-turn onto the newly built section of Pike Run Road to the new Route 206 bridge to connect to CR 601.

Route 206 mainline traffic will remain on the existing highway and bridge during this stage of construction while the new approaches are constructed to connect to the new bridge alignment. New drainage systems need to be constructed along the realigned bridge approaches as well.

The $11.2 million federally funded project is replacing the existing, structurally deficient bridge with a new structure, featuring full-width shoulders and sidewalks, on a new alignment approximately 200 feet south of the existing bridge. The new roadway and bridge alignment will improve the geometry of the Route 206 approach roadways. The project is also reconfiguring the existing multi-leg intersection of Route 206 and CR 601 to a signalized intersection and making numerous improvements to the local roadway system on either side of the bridge.

Construction operations began off the highway in August 2010. The new bridge is expected to fully open in the final configuration in spring 2012.

Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
