Reconfigured Harrison Street intersection with Route 1 opens in West Windsor
New right-turn lane onto Route 1 will reduce backups
(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that the Harrison Street intersection with Route 1 in West Windsor, Mercer County has been opened in its final configuration this morning.
NJDOT’s contractor, Earle Asphalt Company, has widened Harrison Street eastbound to include an additional travel lane to provide increased access to Route 1 in both directions. The newly installed multi-use lane can be used to make the right onto Route 1 southbound, as a through lane across Route 1 and also as a left-turn lane to Route 1 northbound. The existing travel lane has been reconfigured into a dedicated left-turn only lane for motorists headed to Route 1 northbound.
Previously, Harrison Street had featured only one travel lane at the intersection, leading to traffic backups for motorists headed to Route 1 during peak travel periods.
NJDOT expects the improved intersection will better accommodate the higher traffic volumes that are anticipated when the new University Medical Center of Princeton at Plainsboro opens nearby in 2012.
Additionally, the $797,000 project repaved and striped both roadways, modified the existing traffic signal to conform to the new traffic configuration and upgraded the existing curbing and signage at the intersection.
Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.
