Route 9 shift planned along Pohatcong Lake
in Tuckerton
Dam reconstruction project entering next stage

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced a traffic pattern shift is scheduled for Route 9 along the Pohatcong Lake in Tuckerton as the ongoing project enters the next stage of construction.

This Wednesday night, April 11, NJDOT’s contractor, Marbro Inc., is scheduled to shift both travel lanes on Route 9 to the east, between Great Bay Boulevard and South Green Street, and establish a new construction zone on the western (southbound) side of the highway. The new traffic pattern will be in place by 6 a.m. on Thursday, April 12.

The Route 9 travel lanes have been shifted in the reverse fashion, along the eastern side of the highway, since July 2011.

Route 9 carries one travel lane in each direction in this area and both travel lanes will be maintained during daytime and peak travel hours. Single-lane closures are allowed on Route 9 in each direction between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. the following day Monday through Thursday, with alternating traffic patterns. No work will take place on the weekends during the summer season.

The traffic pattern changes are necessary for the ongoing $5.5 million project that will improve the adjacent Pohatcong Lake dam according to the requirements of the Safe Dam Act. A new spillway will be constructed capable to handle a ‘100 year storm event’ without the dam overtopping. Additional improvements will also be made to help prevent dam failure during potential overtopping storm events.

Route 9 will also be resurfaced and improved within the construction limits. The project is scheduled for completion in spring 2013.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are also encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.
