Long-term travel lane closure announced
on Route 21 in Newark City
Construction of new Panasonic Building necessitates
8-to-10 month closure

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced a long-term closure of the right travel lane on Route 21 (McCarter Highway) northbound, just north of Raymond Boulevard (milepost 2.33) is scheduled to take effect in Newark City for approximately 8 to 10 months. The Department has approved the closure to safely accommodate the construction of the new Panasonic Headquarters high-rise building adjacent to the highway.

Beginning Friday, May 11, Route 21 northbound will be reduced from three travel lanes to two, approaching the Raymond Boulevard intersection. In order to commence the construction of the building, a large crane will be placed on the right lane and sidewalk necessitating the closure.

All pedestrians will be detoured to the Route 21 southbound sidewalk to cross back using Center Street (the intersection north of Raymond Boulevard).

Dynamic message signs will be utilized to provide advance notification to motorists of the closure. The following Real-time Severity Alert is being provided on NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org:

Route 21 North, also known as McCarter Highway, will have one lane closed at Raymond Blvd starting Friday May 11th. The closure is expected to be in place for eight to ten months. Motorists planning to use this route during peak periods, particularly in the afternoon, should use mass transit or an alternate route.

NJDOT and the City of Newark are coordinating this work with the Prudential Center and New Jersey TRANSIT.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website for construction updates and real-time travel information.
