Route 77 intersection with CR 538 in Elk Township converted to four-way stop condition
NJDOT implements interim safety measure at behest
of Gloucester County

(Trenton) - NJDOT officials today announced that the Route 77 intersection with CR 538 (Swedesboro-Franklinville Road) in Elk Township, Gloucester County has been converted to a four-way stop condition.

NJDOT urges all motorists to exercise caution and pay attention to the new traffic control devices and warning signage as they approach the newly reconfigured intersection.

The pre-existing condition at this intersection featured an overhead flashing yellow beacon for Route 77 motorists, while CR 538 cross traffic was handled by an overhead flashing red stop beacon with standard ‘Stop’ signs.

NJDOT crews implemented the following upgrades at the intersection earlier this week:

o The overhead flashing yellow beacons on Route 77 have been converted to flashing red stop beacons
o Portable Variable Message Signs (VMS) have been placed approximately one-half mile away from the intersection on Route 77 in both directions displaying a “New traffic pattern - stop ahead - use caution” message to warn motorists of the new condition
o Four new ‘Stop Ahead’ signs have been placed on Route 77 in advance of the intersection - two in either direction, located on each side of the highway
o Four new standard ‘Stop’ signs (with ‘All Way’ placards located beneath them) have been placed on Route 77 at the intersection - two in either direction, located on each side of the highway
o The entire intersection has been restriped to conform to the new four-way stop condition
o All four roadway approaches were restriped for approximately 300-400 feet away from the intersection
o The pre-existing traffic control devices on CR-538 have been upgraded.

NJDOT coordinated with Gloucester County engineering officials in order to implement this interim safety measure at this time. A larger-scale, capital improvement project which proposes to reconfigure the entire intersection is currently in design.

Motorists are also encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
