NJDOT announces Route 206 resurfacing project
in Montgomery and Hillsborough
Six miles of deteriorated pavement to be improved
in both directions

(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a project to resurface almost six miles of Route 206 in both directions from just south of Bridgepoint Road in Montgomery to Doctors Way in Hillsborough, Somerset County.

NJDOT’s contractor, Schifano Construction Corp., has begun preliminary construction activities including site mobilization and sign installation earlier this week, requiring shoulder closures. Initial construction operations will focus on curb repair, starting next week.

The $3.7 million project will resurface Route 206 in both directions with a new surface course of asphalt pavement between milepost 60.46 and 66.42 - skipping over the new bridge over the CSX rail line. The project will improve motorist safety and extend the pavement lifespan along the full width of the roadway, including all travel lanes, turn lanes and shoulders. Upgraded roadway striping, guide rail, curb and ADA-compliant curb ramp upgrades will also be provided as needed. New image detection cameras will be installed at certain intersections to replace the existing, underground loop detectors. These cameras are linked to traffic signals and help maximize the capacity of Route 206.

All travel lanes will be maintained during peak period hours. Repaving work requiring single-lane closures - with alternating traffic patterns - will be done daily between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. and overnight between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. (8 a.m. on Saturdays). Access to all businesses and residences along the state highway will be maintained throughout construction. The project - designed in-house by NJDOT engineers - is scheduled for completion by the end of the year, weather dependent.

Dynamic message signs will notify motorists of all upcoming traffic pattern changes. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
