Route 42 northbound and I-295 will have lane
and ramp closures starting tonight in Bellmawr

Multiple detours in place for overnight work on both roadways

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a series of overnight lane and ramp closures on Route 42 northbound and I-295 northbound and southbound beginning tonight in Bellmawr, Camden County as part of the Direct Connection project. Motorists should slow down, use caution, and expect overnight delays in the area.

Route 42 northbound
Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, December 12, NJDOT’s contractor, PKF Mark III, Inc., will close one lane on Route 42 northbound near the Creek Road overpass, followed by closing the other two lanes by 11 p.m. to erect bridge beams over Route 42. All three lanes will reopen by 9 a.m. Saturday, December 13.

The following detour will be in place:

  • All traffic will be detoured onto the Exit 1B ramp and then to Exit 27, which is a left exit, to get back onto Route 42 northbound/I-76 westbound. Motorists should slow down, use caution, and expect overnight delays.

The beam installation will continue each night next week Monday, December 15, through Thursday December 18, with a single lane on Route 42 northbound closing at 8 p.m., followed by closing the other two lanes by 11 p.m. All lanes will reopen by 5 a.m. the following morning.

I-295 northbound to I-76 westbound
Beginning at 9 p.m. tonight, Friday, December 12, NJDOT’s contractor, PKF Mark III, Inc., will close the left two lanes of I-295 northbound past the Creek Road overpass and Exit 26 to I-76 westbound to install reflectors in the roadway to help delineate the lanes.

Traffic will be directed to continue to Exit 27, which is a left exit, to get onto I-76 westbound. This work is expected to be completed in one night, but an additional night may be necessary next week.

I-295 southbound closure

At 10 p.m., tonight, Friday, December 12, NJDOT’s contractor, Conti Enterprises, is scheduled to close I-295 southbound including the ramp to I-76 eastbound/Route 42 southbound until 8 a.m. Saturday, December 13 for drainage work. This work is expected to take one night.

The following detour will be in place:

  • Motorists traveling on I-295 southbound will be directed to continue to Exit 26/I-76 westbound, which is a left exit, to the Market Street exit to I-295 southbound.

The $900 million federally funded Direct Connection project will provide a seamless route for I-295 motorists traveling through the interchange – through which approximately 250,000 vehicles travel daily to and from Camden, Philadelphia and other destinations. The project has been divided into four separate construction contracts, with completion of the fourth and final contract in the fall of 2021.

Dynamic message signs will be used to notify motorists of the lane closure and detours.  The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.  Motorists are encouraged to check www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
