Interstate 280 westbound traffic to shift
onto newly constructed bridge over Whippany River

New bridge offically opens tonight

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced traffic on I-280 westbound proceeding over the Whippany River in Parsippany will be shifted onto a newly constructed bridge tonight.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, Friday, December 19, NJDOT’s contractor, Ritacco Construction, is scheduled to close one lane as traffic is shifted onto the new bridge.  One lane will be maintained overnight. Motorists have been using a temporary bridge in the median since late September.  All traffic will be shifted onto the new structure by 6 a.m. Saturday.

The $3.5 million project to replace the structurally deficient I-280 westbound bridge deck over the Whippany River, which connects Parsippany-Troy Hills and East Hanover in Morris County, began this past September. In 2012, NJDOT replaced the structurally deficient I-280 eastbound bridge deck over the Whippany River.  Approximately 62,000 vehicles use these bridges every day.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check www.511nj.org for real-time travel information.
