Route 9 sidewalk replacement project requires weekday alternating traffic shifts in Northfield
Preconstruction signage and barrier installation necessary

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced traffic shifts on Route 9 for the start of a sidewalk replacement project in Northfield, Atlantic County.

Beginning Monday, March 14 from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and continuing weekdays until late fall 2016, NJDOT’s contractor, Lexa Concrete, LLC. is scheduled to shift alternating lanes along Route 9 in both directions, between Revere Avenue and Northfield Avenue in Northfield, Atlantic County. Construction signs and concrete barriers will be installed before work on the sidewalk begins. One travel lane in each direction will be maintained during construction to minimize the impact on motorists. There may be additional evening work at times that require lane closures. Shoulder closures, without lane closures will be allowed at any time with no restrictions. Access to all properties will be maintained at all times.

The Route 9 Northfield Sidewalk Replacement Project in Atlantic County is a $1 million federally-funded project that is expected to be completed by late fall 2016. In addition to filling in the gaps between the existing sidewalk, the project also will improve the Zion Road intersection by creating a separate right-hand turn onto Route 9. Additional project improvements include installing handicap ramps, pedestrian push-button signals, drainage modifications, and landscaping.

Route 9 in Northfield is designated a “summer route” by NJDOT, and is subject to modified lane closure hours between May 15 and September 15. Between these summer dates, alternating single lane closures will be allowed Monday through Thursday, 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. excluding holidays.

Variable message signs and construction signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the sidewalk replacement project.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
