NJDOT to open temporary ramp from Route 42 northbound to I-295 northbound tonight in Bellmawr

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the opening of a new ramp from Route 42 northbound to I-295 northbound in Bellmawr tonight as the Direct Connection project advances in Camden and Gloucester counties.

Beginning at 10 p.m., tonight, Friday, September 23, NJDOT contractor, Conti Enterprises, Inc., will begin closing lanes on I-295 northbound at mile post 27 to allow for restriping and barrier installation at the I-295/Route 42/I-76 interchange. At least one lane of traffic will be maintained at all times during the shift.

Traffic going from Route 42 northbound to I-295 northbound will be diverted to a new, temporary, ramp at mile post 27.3 just south of the original ramp. Also, as part of the new traffic pattern, the merge from I-76 eastbound to I-295 northbound will be made from the left lane.

The new configuration will be completed by 10 a.m. Saturday, September 24 and will be in place through the spring of 2017.

The work is part of the $900 million Direct Connection project that will provide a seamless route for I-295 motorists traveling through the interchange of I-295, I-76, and Route 42. The Direct Connection project has been divided into four separate construction contracts, with completion of the fourth and final contract expected in the fall of 2024. NJDOT's project website provides construction activity schedules and updates.

Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
