PROJECT POSTPONED

Route 495 westbound full closure for
dynamic message sign installation in Hudson County
Overhead support structure and signage erection
requires overnight lane closures

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a temporary full closure of Route 495 westbound and two lanes on Route 495 eastbound next weekend for the installation of an overhead support structure and dynamic message signage, in order to advance an Information Technology Services construction project in Hudson County.

Beginning early Saturday morning, December 17, from 12:30 a.m. until 7 a.m., NJDOT’s contractor Orchard Holdings LLC., is scheduled to close Route 495 westbound and two lanes on Route 495 eastbound for the installation of an overhead sign structure on Route 495 westbound below John F. Kennedy Boulevard between North Bergen and Union City.

The sign installation in preparation for an upcoming Route 495 Viaduct Rehabilitation project is expected to begin next summer. During the sign installation, access to and from Kennedy Boulevard and Route 495 will be provided on the upper level by 31st Street and 30th Street. The following I-495 westbound detour will be coordinated with New Jersey State Police:

Route 495 Westbound Detour:

• Route 495 westbound motorists will be directed to take the John F. Kennedy Boulevard Exit ramp, through the rotary lower level below John F. Kennedy Boulevard, and back down to merge with the John F. Kennedy Boulevard ramp onto Route 495 westbound.

The $4 million state-funded Information Technology Services (ITS) construction project, which began in September 2015, requires temporary shoulder lane and ramp closures due to concrete foundation work and electrical installations. The installations include Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Variable Speed Limit Signs (VSLS) and Electronic Lane Control Signals (LCS) on westbound Route 495. NJDOT is coordinating with the Port Authority of NY/NJ, the NJ Turnpike,
NJ TRANSIT, and local authorities to advance the project in stages and minimize impacts to motorists. The project, which will require additional closures and detours, is expected to be completed in spring 2017.

Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
