(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the closure of two lanes on Route 495 between the Lincoln Tunnel and New Jersey Turnpike for three nights this week as the work on dynamic message signs advances in Hudson County. Temporary 15-minute full closures of the roadway may be required.

Wednesday, May 31
  • Route 495 eastbound
Beginning at 9:00 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, May 31 until 5:00 a.m. the next morning, NJDOT’s contractor, Orchard Holdings LLC., is scheduled to close a single right lane on Route 495 eastbound from Park Avenue in Weehawken to Tonnele Avenue in North Bergen.

In addition, from 11 p.m. until 5 a.m., the center lane on Route 495 eastbound from Park Avenue in Weehawken to Tonnele Avenue in North Bergen will also be closed.

  • Route 495 westbound
Beginning at 11:00 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, May 31 until 5:00 a.m. the next morning, NJDOT’s contractor, is scheduled to close a single right lane on Route 495 westbound from Park Avenue in Weehawken to Tonnele Avenue in North Bergen.

In addition, from 1 a.m. until 5 a.m., the center lane on Route 495 westbound from Park Avenue in Weehawken to Tonnele Avenue in North Bergen will also be closed.

Thursday, June 1 and Friday, June 2
(There will be no Route 495 eastbound closures required on June 1 or June 2)

  • Route 495 westbound
Beginning at 11:00 p.m., until 5:00 a.m. the next morning, Thursday, June 1 and again overnight on Friday, June 2, NJDOT’s contractor, is scheduled to close a single left lane on Route 495 westbound from Park Avenue in Weehawken to Tonnele Avenue in North Bergen.

In addition, from 1 a.m. until 5 a.m., the center lane on Route 495 westbound from Park Avenue in Weehawken to Tonnele Avenue in North Bergen will also be closed.

The closures are necessary for the ongoing removal and replacement of overhead signs and infrastructure, which is in preparation for an upcoming Route 495 Viaduct Rehabilitation project expected to begin bridge deck work in 2018.

The $4 million state-funded Information Technology Services (ITS) construction project, which began in September 2015, requires temporary shoulder, lane, and ramp closures due to concrete foundation work and electrical installations. The installations include Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), Variable Speed Limit Signs (VSLS) and Electronic Lane Control Signals (LCS) on westbound Route 495. NJDOT is coordinating with the Port Authority of NY/NJ, the NJ Turnpike Authority, NJ TRANSIT, and local authorities to advance the project in stages and minimize impacts to motorists. The project, which will require additional closures and detours, is expected to be completed in summer 2017.

Construction signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the motoring public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
