Route 168 southbound lane shifts this weekend as Bridge over Newton Lake Dam project advances
in Camden County

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a traffic shift on Route 168 southbound as the Route 168 Newton Lake Dam project advances in Camden County.

Beginning at 7 a.m., Saturday, March 3, until 6 p.m., NJDOT’s contractor, South State, Inc., will be removing and relocating construction barrier to establish a traffic shift on Route 168 southbound. The current configuration has a single travel lane on either side of a work zone. The new configuration will shift traffic to the left, maintaining two adjacent travel lanes southbound with the work zone on the right. Route 168 northbound will remain a single lane. The new configuration is expected to be in place until the summer to allow for drainage work and paving.

The $8.5 million federally funded Route 168 Newton Lake Dam project began construction in spring of 2016. It includes replacing the bridge deck and beams, safety improvements for the bridge approaches, and resurfacing the bridge and roadway. In addition, the existing spillway is being replaced; steel sheeting to protect the dam and roadway from damage during 100-year storm is being installed; and sidewalks are being added or improved along Route 168 southbound. The project is expected to be completed in the fall of 2018.

Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the interchange improvements project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
