Routes 1 & 9 southbound local traffic will be shifted at Haynes Avenue for improvements project in Newark

Routes 1&9/Haynes Avenue operational improvements advances

(Trenton) -The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced temporary lane shifts on the Routes 1 & 9 southbound local lanes at Haynes Avenue as the improvements project advances in Essex County.

Beginning at 9 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, April 27 until 7 a.m. Saturday, April 28, NJDOT’s contractor Anselmi and Decicco, Inc., will close one travel lane on Routes 1 & 9 southbound local to shift traffic to the left before Haynes Avenue. One travel lane will be maintained at all times.

This shift, expected to be in place for approximately two months, will allow for a work zone on the right side for lane reconstruction, under the Haynes Avenue overpass, including drainage work and final pavement. The two lanes that will be maintained during daytime hours will be narrowed to 11-feet. Periodic overnight lane closures will occur as needed. Motorists are advised to use caution when traveling through the area.

The $14.2 million federally-funded Routes 1&9/Haynes Avenue operational improvements project is designed to improve safety and traffic flow by constructing a new roundabout at the intersection of Routes 1&9 southbound, Haynes Avenue, and Bessemer Street, adding a third lane and shoulder between the Haynes Avenue exit ramp and the Anheuser-Busch entrance ramp, a realignment of the Routes 1&9 southbound ramps, and new pavement on the roadways in the area. The project is being accomplished in stages, and is expected to be completed in summer 2018.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info and on the NJDOT Facebook page.
