Marine Trades ProgramNational Boating Infrastructure Grant Program (NBIG)Since 2001, the New Jersey Department of Transportation's Office of Maritime Resources (NJDOT/OMR) has accepted Proposals for funding under the National Boating Infrastructure Grant Program (NBIG). NBIG was initially authorized by Section 7404 of the Sportfishing and Boating Safety Act of 1998. The program was reauthorized by Congress in the FY 2005 transportation legislation, SAFETEA-LU. NBIG funds are provided through the US Department of the Interior, US Fish and Wildlife Service to states to construct, renovate, and maintain tie-up facilities for transient, recreational vessels 26 feet or more in length, and are distributed annually. To ensure that each state gets a share, funding is provided on a two-tiered basis. For Tier 1 grants, all states are allotted $100,000 per grant cycle as long as their proposals meet the programs guidelines. Tier 2 projects are designated for larger, more expensive projects, and are awarded on a nationwide competitive basis. In New Jersey, federal funding focused on transient boating is a welcome addition to the increasing scope of maritime and marine trade development provided through NJDOT. NJDOT/OMR is currently accepting Letters of Interest (LOI) for FY 2014 NBIG funding. NJDOT/OMR has obtained over $3 million in NBIG funds for:
