The New Jersey Department of Transportation's (NJDOT) Transportation Systems Management's (TSM) mission is to alleviate traffic congestion and travel disruptions that inconvenience motorists and make New Jersey's highways more efficient and safe for those who travel them every day.

Perhaps difficult at times but the best way to manage congestion is to control the factors causing it. TSM does this on a daily basis by taking a systems approach to managing New Jersey's highways and providing "smart solutions" to help motorists get to their destinations quickly and safely. Some of the "smart solutions" that make a motorist's driving experience efficient and safe include:

  • reducing the time it takes to clear an incident and re-open travel lanes by working along with State and local police to respond to incidents and emergencies,

  • providing information about traffic delays, detour routes, and construction via Dynamic Message Signs (DMS),

  • using real-time traffic reporting and providing customer access to traffic cameras on the 511NJ Travel Information Web site,

  • ensuring lane closure hours are appropriate so that the impacts from construction are kept to a minimum for the duration of the project,

  • providing travel times so that motorists know in advance how long it will take to reach their destination.
