Central Dispatch Unit

The New Jersey Department of Transportation's (NJDOT) Central Dispatch Unit (CDU) is the 24/7 communications hub for the Department. The CDU's mission is to serve as the "single point of contact" to handle all emergency calls from police departments and citizens statewide. The CDU staff works alongside the New Jersey State Police's (NJSP) and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's (NJDEP) Operational Dispatch Units at the NJSP Communications Center in Hamilton Township, New Jersey. In addition to handling emergency calls, the CDU is responsible for dispatching the Department's Safety Service Patrols (SSP) during SSP hours of operation.

The CDU Communication Operators handle more than 180,000 calls per year, in addition to the tens of thousands of radio transmissions from various units in the Department. Types of phone calls received at CDU for Department response range from a traffic light being knocked down and blocking an intersection, to a request for help from a Fire Department or a report of debris that is presenting a safety hazard on the highway system. All transactions are recorded and crews are dispatched accordingly.
