I-280 stickel bridge rehabilitation and reconstruction graphic

Traffic Patterns

There will be permanent and temporary closures of lanes, roadways and ramps during construction with detours (pdf 429 kb).

Lane closures

Temporary closure of acceleration/deceleration lanes
The existing bridge deck roadway provides two lanes plus an acceleration/deceleration lane without shoulders in each direction.

Temporary single lane closures
In addition, there will be temporary single lane closures during night off-peak hours for the delivery of materials, equipment movements and installation and testing of lift bridge mechanical equipment.

Roadway closures

There also will be temporary complete roadway closures of I-280 with traffic detours from 12 am to 5 am for mechanical and electrical work and to accommodate the bearing jacking operations. Typically, this type of mechanical work is performed with extended complete closure/shutdown of the roadway. However, recognizing the significant traffic impacts on I-280, only a minimal number of nightly full closures have been specified.

There will be temporary complete roadway closures of I-280 east and westbound between Exits 15 and 16 from 12 am to 5 am. The weekend night closures will continue Friday, March 20, March 27 and April 3, 2009. Saturday nights will be used as rain dates. The closure will require all traffic to detour (pdf 429 kb) via local streets.

There will also be periodic weeknight short term (15 minutes) closures at the bridge for lift span operations through the Spring.

Ramp closures

The ramp from Route 21 northbound to I-280 eastbound is closed. The ramp from Route 21 northbound to I-280 eastbound is closed (pdf 492 kb) until mid April 2009 during the remainder of the rehabilitation of the I-280 Stickel Bridge.

This ramp has low volume so the impact should be minimal. Most drivers on Route 21 northbound use Bridge Street to Harrison Street to access I-280 eastbound.
