Subject: Release of revisions and additions to NJDOT Design Manual - Roadway, Section 1 "Introduction", Section 5 "Major Cross Section Elements", and Section 6"At-Grade Intersections
Attached for inclusion in your copy of the NJDOT Design Manual - Roadway are revisions and additions to the following pages of Sections 1, 5, 6, and 7 along with a revised Table of Contents:
Replace TC-3 and TC-4 with New Page TC-3 and TC-4
Replace Page 1-1 and 1-2 with New Page 1-1 and 1-2
Replace Page 5-5 and 5-6 with New Page 5-5 and 5-6
Replace Page 6-17 and 6-18 with New Page 6-17 and 6-18
Replace Pages 6-21 through 6-43 with New Pages 6-21 through 6-44
Replace Pages 7-9 through 7-12 with New Pages 7-9 through 7-12
Replace Page 7-15 and 7-16 with New Page 7-15 and 7-16
The revisions and additions to the NJDOT Design Manual – Roadway are described as follows
Revised "Auxiliary lane length (interchange)" to "Acceleration/Deceleration lane length (interchange)"
Eliminated "(accel or decel lane)" from the second and third sentence in the second paragraph
Added "increased capacity through an intersection" to the first sentence in the first paragraph.
Added last sentence in first paragraph
Combined the second and third paragraphs and revised "auxiliary lanes" to "acceleration and deceleration lanes"
Added discussion relative to adding auxiliary lanes to increase intersection capacity
Added new Figure 6-N AUXILIARY LANE ADDITIONS AT SIGNALIZED INTERSECTIONS
Subsections 6-05.4 through 6-10.4
Existing Figures 6-N through 6-Y and references renumbered
"auxiliary lanes" in first sentence revised to "acceleration and deceleration lanes"
Figure 7-C and 7-D, reference to Figure 6-O revised to 6-N
Instructions to Designers
Effective immediately, the addition of an auxiliary lane at a signalized intersection to increase capacity shall only be incorporated into a project when recommended by the Bureau of Traffic Signals and Safety Engineering. The addition of the auxiliary may be included in projects currently under design that have not progressed to Final Design Development, except when the addition of the auxiliary lane would require substantial cost or schedule changes. In such cases, the Designer shall contact the Department’s Project Manager to determine how to proceed.
