Statewide Traffic Operations

Statewide Traffic Operations has integrated the policies and procedures of NJDOT and the Toll Road Authorities as they relate to operating our transportation system. Statewide Traffic Operations is currently working with the NJ Turnpike Authority on constructing a Statewide Traffic Management Center in Woodbridge.

Our overall mission is to keep traffic safely moving by quickly clearing incidents and providing real time traffic information by using the latest transportation technology. This is accomplished through a variety of safety and technology-related programs such as the Emergency Service Patrols, the Traffic Operations Centers, our Statewide Incident Management Program and the deployment of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). In addition, the Department's Centralized Dispatch Unit (CDU) operated under the Statewide Traffic Operations umbrella and is responsible for handling all emergency calls that come in from police departments and the public throughout the state.

Traffic Operations Centers in Elmwood Park and Cherry Hill operate more than 178 cameras, 91 electronic variable message signs, 14 highway advisory radio transmitter sites and help activate Amber Alert bulletins concerning child abductions. Information from these Traffic Operations Centers support real time traffic information online at www.njcommuter.com as well as several traffic reporting services and TRANSCOM. The Web cameras alone experience close to 1 million hits annually.

The Emergency Service Patrols have assisted over 400,000 motorists on New Jersey's state highways during its 12 year existence. They patrol approximately 400 miles of roadway statewide. We also coordinate a Statewide Incident Management Program in cooperation with the New Jersey State Police.
