Speed Limits for State Roads


Route US 9

(a)

The rate of speed designated for the certain parts of State Highway Route US 9 described in this subsection are hereby established and adopted as the maximum legal rate of speed:

1.

In Cape May County:

NOTE: State Highway Route US 9 is under Delaware River and Bay Authority jurisdiction from approximate mileposts 0.00 to 3.06.

NOTE: Route US 9 from approximate mileposts 30.72 to 31.90 is under Cape May County Bridge Commission jurisdiction (formerly Beesley’s Point Bridge Company jurisdiction) from approximate mileposts 30.72 to 31.90.

i. In the Township of Lower:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between Route NJ 109 and 2,330 feet south of Bennetts Crossing Road (approximate mileposts 3.06 to 3.79); thence

(B) Zone 2: 45 MPH between 2,330 feet south of Bennetts Crossing Road and Sally Marshall Drive – Cresse Lane, except for 35 MPH when passing through the Lower Cape May Regional High School-Teitelman School (Bennetts Crossing) zone (mileposts 4.18 to 4.47), while 35 MPH "When Flashing" signs are operating during recess when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway or while children are going to or leaving school during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 3.79 to 5.83); thence

(C) Zone 3: 40 MPH between Sally Marshall Drive – Cresse Lane and the Lower Township - Middle Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 5.83 to 6.63); thence

ii. In the Township of Middle:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between Lower Township - Middle Township corporate line and 100 feet south of the exit from the Garden State Parkway except for 25 MPH when passing through the Cape May County Christian School zone (mileposts 10.508 to 10.572) during recess when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 6.63 to 10.90); thence

(B) Zone 2: 35 MPH between 100 feet south of the exit from the Garden State Parkway and Locust Lane (approximate mileposts 10.90 to 11.97); thence

(C) Zone 3: 30 MPH between Locust Lane and 1000 feet north of Orbit Drive except for 25 MPH when passing through the Middle Township Elementary School Zone (mileposts 12.10 to 12.421) while "25 MPH when flashing" signs are operating during recess or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 11.97 to 13.41); thence

(D) Zone 4: 40 MPH between 1000 feet north of Orbit Drive and 1000 feet north of Crest Haven Boulevard (County Route 609) (mileposts 13.41 to 14.40); thence

(E) Zone 5: 50 MPH between 1000 feet north of Crest Haven Boulevard (County Route 609) and the Middle Township - Dennis Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 14.40 to 18.04); thence

iii. In the Township of Dennis:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 45 MPH between the Middle Township – Dennis Township corporate line and Landing Road (approximate mileposts 18.04 to 19.06); thence

(B) Zone 2: 50 MPH between Landing Road and the Dennis Township – Upper Township corporate line, except for 25 MH when passing through the Bishop McHugh Regional Catholic School zone while “25 MPH When Flashing” signs are operating during recess or while children are going to or from school, during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 19.06 to 22.39); thence

iv. In the Township of Upper:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Dennis Township - Upper Township corporate line and 700 feet south of Route NJ 50 (approximate mileposts 22.39 to 23.63); thence

(B) Zone 2: 40 MPH between 700 feet south of Route NJ 50 and 1350 feet north of Route NJ 50 (approximate mileposts 23.63 to 24.01); thence

(C) Zone 3: 45 MPH between 1,350 feet north of Route NJ 50 and 800 feet south of Tuckahoe Road-Marmora Road (County Route 631) (approximate mileposts 24.01 to 28.42); thence

(D) Zone 4: 40 MPH between 800 feet south of Tuckahoe Road - Marmora Road (County Road 631) and 100 feet north of Lenape Lane (approximate mileposts 28.42 to 29.40); thence

(E) Zone 5: 45 MPH between 100 feet north of Lenape Lane and 200 feet south of Harbor Road (approximate mileposts 29.40 to 30.61); thence

(F) Zone 6: 40 MPH between 200 feet south of Harbor Road and the southernmost end of the Beesley's Point Bridge (Cape May County Bridge Commission – New Jersey Department of Transportation southernmost jurisdictional line) (approximate mileposts 30.61 to 30.72); thence

NOTE: Route US 9 from approximate mileposts 30.72 to 31.90 is under Cape May County Bridge Commission jurisdiction (formerly Beesley’s Point Bridge Company jurisdiction) from approximate mileposts 30.72 to 31.90.

In Atlantic County:

NOTE: State Highway Route US 9 from approximate mileposts 52.59 to 54.85 is coincident with the Garden State Parkway (approximate mileposts 48.43 to 50.70) and under the jurisdiction of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) for that length.

i. In the City of Somers Point:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 45 MPH between the Cape May County Bridge Commission - New Jersey Department of Transportation jurisdictional line and Mays Landing Road (County Route 559) (approximate mileposts 31.85 to 32.64); thence

(B) Zone 2: 35 MPH between Mays Landing Road (County Route 559) and Route NJ 52 (approximate mileposts 32.64 to 33.23); thence

(C) Zone 3: 40 MPH between Route NJ 52 and the City of Somers Point  - City of Linwood corporate line (approximate mileposts 33.23 to 34.57); thence

ii. In the City of Linwood:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the City of Somers Point - City of Linwood corporate line and the City of Linwood – City of Northfield corporate line, except for 25 MPH when passing through the Mainland High School zone during recess, when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 34.57 to 37.06); thence

iii. In the City of Northfield:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the City of Linwood - City of Northfield corporate line corporate line and Cedar Bridge Road, except for 25 MPH when passing through the Northfield Community School zone during recess when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 37.06 to 37.47); thence

(B) Zone 2: 35 MPH between Cedar Bridge Road and Jackson Avenue, except for 25 MPH School Speed Zone in the Northfield Community School zone during recess when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 37.47 to 38.47); thence

(C) Zone 3: 40 MPH between Jackson Avenue and the City of Northfield - City of Pleasantville corporate line (approximate mileposts 38.47 to 38.97); thence

iv. In the City of Pleasantville:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 35 MPH between the Northfield City - Pleasantville City corporate line (a point 106 feet south of Ridgewood Avenue) and 290 feet north of Lafayette Avenue (approximate mileposts 38.97 to 39.56); thence

(B) Zone 2: 30 MPH between a point 290 feet north of Lafayette Avenue and Route US 40-US 322 (approximate mileposts 39.56 to 39.93); thence

(C) Zone 3: 35 MPH between Route US 40-322 and the City of Pleasantville City – City of Absecon corporate line (approximate mileposts 39.93 to 41.82); thence

v. In the City of Absecon:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 35 MPH between the City of Pleasantville - City of Absecon corporate line and 450 feet north of West California Avenue (approximate mileposts 41.82 to 41.96); thence

(B) Zone 2: 45 MPH between 450 feet north of West California Avenue and 500 feet south of Orchard Street except with a 35 miles per hour School Speed zone in the Holy Spirit High School zone during recess when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 41.96 to 42.56); thence

(C) Zone 3: 35 MPH between 500 feet south of Orchard Street and 250 feet north of Ohio Avenue (approximate mileposts 42.56 to 42.79); thence

(D) Zone 4: 25 MPH between 250 feet north of Ohio Avenue and West Church Street (approximate mileposts 42.79 to 42.98); thence

(E) Zone 5: 35 MPH between West Church Street and Route NJ 157 (approximate mileposts 42.98 to 43.85); thence

(F) Zone 6: 40 MPH between Route NJ 157 and the City of Absecon-Township of Galloway line (approximate mileposts 43.85 to 44.07); thence

vi. In the Township of Galloway:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the City of Absecon - Galloway Township corporate line and East Brook Avenue - Old Shore Road (approximate mileposts 44.07 to 44.61); thence

(B) Zone 2: 45 MPH between East Brook Avenue - Old Shore Road and 600 feet north of Sommers Town Lane (approximate mileposts 44.61 to 46.58); thence

(C) Zone 3: 40 MPH between 600 feet north of Sommers Town Lane and 1,200 feet north of Old Port Republic Road - Oyster Creek Road (County Route 618) (approximate mileposts 46.58 to 47.26); thence

(D) Zone 4: 45 MPH between 1,200 feet north of Old Port Republic Road-Oyster Creek Road (County Route 618) and Quail Hill Boulevard (approximate mileposts 47.26 to 48.37); thence

(E) Zone 5: 40 MPH between Quail Hill Boulevard and Old New York Road (County Route 610) (approximate mileposts 48.37 to 48.76); thence

(F) Zone 6: 45 MPH between Old New York Road (County Route 610) and Smith Bowen Road (approximate mileposts 48.76 to 49.09); thence

(G) Zone 7: 50 MPH between Smith Bowen Road and the Galloway Township - City of Port Republic corporate line (approximate mileposts 49.09 to 51.40); thence

vii. In the City of Port Republic:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Galloway Township - City of Port Republic corporate line and the Garden State Parkway  (approximate mileposts 51.40 to 52.59); thence

NOTE: State Highway Route US 9 from approximate mileposts 52.59 to 54.85 is coincident with the Garden State Parkway (approximate mileposts 48.43 to 50.70) and under the jurisdiction of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) for that length.

In Burlington County:

i. In the Township of Bass River:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 45 MPH between the Garden State Parkway and County Route 542 (approximate mileposts 54.85 to 56.12); thence

(B) Zone 2: 35 MPH between County Route 542 and Green Bush Road (County Route 654) (approximate mileposts 56.12 to 57.39); thence

(C) Zone 3: 50 MPH between East Green Bush Road (County Route 654) and the Bass River Township – Little Egg Harbor Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 57.39 to 59.94); thence

In Ocean County:

i. In the Township of Little Egg Harbor:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Bass River Township – Little Egg Harbor Township corporate line and a point 280 feet south of Wisteria Lane (approximate mileposts 59.94 to 61.63); thence

(B) Zone 2: 40 MPH between 280 feet south of Wisteria Lane and the Little Egg Harbor Township – Tuckerton Borough southerly corporate line (approximate mileposts 61.63 to 62.15); thence

(C) Zone 3: 45 MPH between the Tuckerton Borough – Little Egg Harbor northerly corporate line and Brook Street (approximate mileposts 64.15 to 64.76); thence

(D) Zone 4: 40 MPH between Brook Street and the Little Egg Harbor - Eagleswood Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 64.76 to 65.41); thence

ii. In the Borough of Tuckerton:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the Little Egg Harbor Township - Tuckerton Borough corporate line and Maple Avenue (approximate mileposts 62.15 to 62.33); thence

(B) Zone 2: 35 MPH between Maple Avenue and the Bridge at Pohatcong Lake (approximate mileposts 62.33 to 62.50); thence

(C) Zone 3: 30 MPH between the Bridge at Pohatcong Lake and 200 feet south of Tip Seaman Drive (Pine Street) (approximate mileposts 62.50 to 63.03); thence

(D) Zone 4: 40 MPH between 200 feet south of Tip Seaman Drive (Pine Street) and 900 feet north of Locust Street (approximate mileposts 63.03 to 63.20); thence

(E) Zone 5: 45 MPH between 900 feet north of Locust Street and the Tuckerton Borough – Little Egg Harbor Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 63.20 to 64.15); thence

iii. In the Township of Eagleswood:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 40 MPH between the Little Egg Harbor Township - Eagleswood Township corporate line and Willets Avenue (approximate mileposts 65.41 to 65.43); thence

(B) Zone 2: 35 MPH between Willets Avenue and 625 feet north of Mill Street (County Route 4) (approximate mileposts 65.43 to 65.99); thence

(C) Zone 3: 45 MPH between 625 feet north of Mill Street and the Eagleswood Township – Stafford Township corporate line, except for 30 MPH when passing through the Eagleswood Elementary School zone while “30 MPH When Flashing” signs are operating during recess, when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway or while children are going to or leaving school during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 65.99 to 68.42); thence

iv. In the Township of Stafford:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 45 MPH between the Eagleswood Township – Stafford Township corporate line and Route NJ 72 (approximate mileposts 68.42 to 70.53); thence

(B) Zone 2: 35 MPH between Route NJ 72 and Lakewood Avenue (approximate mileposts 70.53 to 71.00); thence

(C) Zone 3: 40 MPH between Lakewood Avenue and  Manor Drive, except 25 MPH in the Stafford Township Elementary School zone during recess or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 71.00 to 71.27; thence

(D) Zone 4: 50 MPH between Manor Drive and the Stafford Township – Barnegat Township corporate line, except for 35 MPH in the Southern Regional High School zone during recess when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours (approximate mileposts 71.27 to 73.30); thence

v. In the Township of Barnegat:

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Stafford Township – Barnegat Township corporate line and Lower Shore Road (approximate mileposts 73.30 to 74.51); thence

xii. In the Township of Toms River (formerly the Township of Dover):

(A) Zone 1: 45 MPH between the Toms River Township – Lakewood Township corporate line and 200 feet south of High Street (approximate mileposts 98.75 to 100.30); thence

(B) Zone 2: 40 MPH between 200 feet south of High Street and 400 feet south of Central Avenue (approximate mileposts 100.30 to 101.39); thence

(C) Zone 3: 35 MPH between 400 feet south of Central Avenue and Seventh Street, except 25 MPH School Speed zone within the Cheder Elementary School zone in Lakewood Township, Ocean County during recess when the presence of children is clearly visible from the roadway or while children are going to or leaving school, during opening or closing hours. (D) Zone 4: 55 MPH  between West Farm Road and the Howell Township – Freehold Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 108.67 to 110.90); thence

ii. In the Township of Freehold:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 55 MPH between the Howell Township – Freehold Township corporate line and Elton-Adelphia Road (County Route 524) (approximate mileposts 110.90 to 111.35); thence

(B) Zone 2: 50 MPH between Elton-Adelphia Road (County Route 524) and the Freehold Township – Freehold Borough southerly corporate line (approximate mileposts 111.35 to 113.56); thence

(C) Zone 3: 50 MPH between the Freehold Township – Freehold Borough northerly corporate line and the intersection of Route NJ 33 Business (approximate mileposts 113.84 to 114.33); thence

(D) Zone 4: 55 MPH between the intersection of Route NJ 33 Business and the Freehold Township – Manalapan Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 114.33 to 116.31); thence

iii.  In the Borough of Freehold:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Freehold Township – Freehold Borough corporate line and the Freehold Township – Freehold Borough corporate line (approximate mileposts 113.56 to 113.84); thence

iv.  In the Township of Manalapan:

(A) Zone 1: 55 MPH between the Freehold Township – Manalapan Township corporate line and the Manalapan Township – Marlboro Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 116.31 to 119.25); thence

v.  In the Township of Marlboro:

ii.  In the Borough of Sayreville:

(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Old Bridge Township – Sayreville Borough corporate line and the Sayreville Borough – City of South Amboy southerly corporate line (approximate mileposts 127.94 to 129.60); thence

(B) Zone 2: 50 MPH between the Sayreville Borough – City of South Amboy northerly corporate line and the Sayreville Borough – Woodbridge Township corporate line (approximate mileposts 130.46 to 132.29); thence

iii.  In the City of South Amboy:

(1)

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Sayreville Borough – City of South Amboy southerly corporate line and the City of South Amboy – Sayreville Borough northerly corporate line (approximate mileposts 129.60 to 130.46); thence

iv.  In the Township of Woodbridge:

For both directions of traffic:

(A) Zone 1: 50 MPH between the Sayreville Borough – Woodbridge Township corporate line and the beginning of coincidence with Route US 1 (approximate mileposts 132.29 to 136.38); thence

NOTE: State Highway Route US 9 is coincident with State Highway Route US 1 from 136.38 to 165.18.  See Route US 1 & 9 for speed limits in this section.

NOTE: State Highway Route US 1&9 is coincident with State Highway Route I-95 (New Jersey Turnpike) from 165.18 to 166.34 (end of route) and is under New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) for that length.
