Governor’s 2006 Conference on Tourism Slated for April 5-7

Trenton, NJ (March 3, 2006) —New Jersey had a stellar year for travel & tourism and the Governor’s Conference on Tourism April 5-7 at Trump Plaza in Atlantic City will help keep the momentum high. A host of programs and renowned speakers in the industry will offer insight on how to continue promoting the state as a premier travel destination.

“The tourism industry had a successful 2005 offering winning attractions, programs and amenities throughout the state,” said Nancy Byrne, executive director. “Expectations are just as high for 2006 and we want to provide industry representatives with the proper tools and strategies to make for a successful tourism season.”

The conference begins Wednesday April 5 focusing on Travel Industry professionals as small business owners. The first session will be a workshop on Desktop Publishing followed by a presentation by Patricia Weeks, director of the Educational Technology Training Center Southern Regional Institute and Educational Technology Center at the Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. Weeks will speak on how to efficiently promote your business by producing professional looking flyers, brochures, newsletters and other printed material from common software programs.

Commerce Secretary Virginia Bauer, Tourism Executive Director Nancy Byrne and Steve Whiteside, President of the New Jersey Travel & Industry Association will give opening remarks Thursday April 6. The keynote speaker for Thursday’s general session will be Jonathan Tisch, Chairman and CEO of Loews Hotels, who will discuss lessons of partnership from his book, The Power of We. Governor Jon S. Corzine is the invited guest speaker for the tourism awards luncheon.

The conference will conclude Friday, April 7 with a session on Arts, History and Tourism and its effectiveness as a partner in community development. The last session, “Your Voice and Your Vote, How to Put Meaning in the Phrase: “We the People,” will provide insight on effective advocacy for the tourism industry.

The Governor’s Conference on Tourism is a joint venture hosted by the New Jersey Commerce, Economic Growth & Tourism Commission’s Office of Travel & Tourism and the New Jersey Travel Industry Association. Tourism’s contribution to the state’s economy totaled $32 billion in 2004. Tourism activity generated $3.7 billion in state tax revenues. The sector also supported more than $430,000 jobs and generated $12.8 billion in wages and salaries.
