MOST NEW JERSEY PUBLIC BEACHES REMAIN OPEN DESPITE GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN –
INCLUDING ATLANTIC CITY

Trenton, NJ — Potential New Jersey beach-goers are reminded that only one public, state-owned beach has been closed as a result of the state government shutdown this week - Island Beach State Park, in Ocean County.

Several media outlets have reported today – erroneously – that the government shutdown has resulted in the closure of “all” or “most” New Jersey beaches. Nothing could be further from the truth.

New Jersey has a long tradition of local municipalities, including Atlantic City, retaining ownership and control of the beaches within their borders. As a result, the budget impasse in Trenton, and the resulting shutdown, has had little impact on day-to-day activities at these popular destinations.

The New Jersey Commerce, Economic Growth & Tourism Commission has asked that media outlets, in their reports of the shutdown, please make the appropriate clarification in regard to beach closures.
