Sunset Lake Hydrofest Takes to the Waters of Wildwood

Trenton—Championship hydroplane and flatbottom racing will speed into Wildwood Crest September 30-October 1 when more than 70 teams from the Canada and the United States go after a coveted award.

“The Sunset Lake Hydrofest is an exciting, fast paced event attended by throngs of spectators every year who not only enjoy the speeding cruisers but also the spirited marketplace,” said Nancy Byrne, Executive Director of Travel and Tourism.

Nine classes of race boats are scheduled to compete on the approximately 1-mile oval course as they skim across the water at 70 to 130 mph. The powerboat racing is slated to begin immediately after the opening ceremonies at 11:30 am and will continue to approximately 4 pm. The racecourse is in full-view of the spectator area. Bleachers will be available, but spectators are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or beach blankets.

The event is dual-sanctioned by both by the American Power Boat Association and the Canadian Boating Federation. Teams are eligible to earn national points for both organizations high-point awards.

Boats will be on display ranging in size and power from 12 feet to 23 feet in length and from 4-cylinder stock engines to big block modified engines strutting huge horsepower. Sunset Lake Hydrofest is free to spectators. However, if fans want to see the race boats up close and talk to the drivers and crews, pit passes can be purchased for $10 at the credentials tent located at the north pit gate, New Jersey and Nashville Avenues. (Closed footwear is required in the pits)

In addition to the championship powerboat racing, spectators will enjoy an outdoor festival of 50 vendors, attractions, children’s activities and displays. The vending area is open from 9 am to 4 pm.

The Sunset Lake Hydrofest is a recipient of the New Jersey Travel & Tourism Cooperative Marketing Grant. The Cooperative Marketing Sponsorship Program has been a valuable tool for tourism industry representatives who show a commitment to increasing visitation and generating visitor revenues throughout the Garden State.

Funding and support also was provided by the Wildwood Crest business community, the Greater Wildwood Tourism Improvement Development Authority, the Borough of Wildwood Crest and the Sunset Lake Hydrofest Association.
