COMMON PROBLEMS
INDIVIDUAL GROSS INCOME TAX NJ-1040
The following
frequently seen errors are highlighted because these errors cause delays
in processing of payments and refunds. They can also lead to misdirected
documents and payment allocations.
Mail sent
to the wrong address
With the current levels of technology, it is impossible to efficiently
and accurately process forms when the documents received by the Division
have been sent to the wrong Post Office Box. The list below shows the
correct address for each item.
PO Box 111, Trenton NJ 08645-0111 is for Taxes Due, include NJ-1040-V.
PO Box 197, Trenton NJ 08646-0197 is for Homestead Rebate only.
PO Box 555, Trenton NJ 08647-0555 is for NJ-1040 with no tax due.
Checks should be returned with the voucher NJ-1040-V
If a check and voucher are enclosed, the envelope should be sent to PO
Box 111, Trenton NJ 08645-0111.
Checks with a stub attached
If your system prints a stub with the check please detach it before mailing
the check. Enclosing any additional documents other than what is required
will delay the processing of your return and check.
Stapled forms
Do not use staples or paper clips to attach checks to the voucher, NJ-1040-V.
Do not use staples or paper clips to attach schedules and supporting documents
to the NJ-1040.
Voter Registration Application
The voter registration should not be sent in the same envelope as the
NJ-1040 documents. Send the Voter Registration Application to Dept of
Law and Public Safety, PO Box 304 Trenton NJ 08625-0304.
Review the arithmetic
Check addition and subtraction. Look for transposed numbers.
Sign and date the return
Both spouses must sign a joint return.
Enclose ALL supporting documents and schedules
