04/29/05 Property Tax Relief Programs In accordance with Acting Governor Codey’s proposed budget, applications for the 2004 FAIR homeowner rebate are being mailed from April 26 through May 3 to homeowners who were 65 years of age or older or disabled on the last day of the 2004 tax year. With few exceptions, applications must be filed either online or by phone.

Since the Governor’s proposed budget would suspend the FAIR program for non-senior and non-disabled residents this year, the current mailing is limited to only senior and disabled homeowners. Once the State Budget for the coming fiscal year has been finalized, additional applications will be sent out as necessary with an appropriate timeline for completion. If authorized, these applications would include any and all resident groups identified in the final budget.

Senior and disabled homeowners will have until June 1, 2005, to file their applications.

The FAIR homeowner rebate automated telephone filing system (1-877-658-2972) and Internet filing application on the Division of Taxation Web site ( www.state.nj.us/treasury/taxation) will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week during the filing period. Homeowners who have questions or need help filing their applications can call the FAIR Rebate Hotline at 1-888-238-1233. Representatives are available from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, except holidays.
04/07/05 Tax Practitioner There are currently two bills pending before the New Jersey Legislature (S2211, A3825) which would require certain tax preparers to file their clients’ returns electronically and subject those preparers to a penalty when they failed to do so.
