Farm
Offers Flexible Agricultural Education Sessions
Alstede Farms takes pride in the fact that their efforts preserve
over 1,000 acres of farmland in Chester Township, much of
which is enrolled in the New Jersey Farmland Preservation
Program. Alstede Farms offers students on opportunity to see
one of Morris County's largest working farms where a generous
mixture of crops are produced, ranging from fruits and vegetables
to hay and grain, The farm has two retail markets on site,
but also offers students the options of visiting the in-season
pick-your- own strawberries, raspberries and pumpkins, and
learning innovative crop production techniques. In addition,
the farm allows students to meet and greet an assortment of
live farm animals. Education is an important element at Alstede
Farms; they have provided agricultural education sessions
since 1982. Kurt holds a degree in Horticulture, while Barbara
hold a degree in Education; she spent nine years working with
children with learning disabilities. Both Kurt and Barbara
are first-generation farmers, and because of their life experiences
and education, the farm's education sessions can be modified
to meet a teacher's lesson plan for any grade group, covering
a wide variety of agricultural education topics.
