Muzzarelli Farms and Learn About NJ Agriculture
Located on the county line that divides Cumberland and Atlantic
Counties, Muzzarelli Farms is a fourth-generation, family-owned
business that started in 1937. Over the last 20 years, the
farm has grown from an 80-acre wholesale vegetable operation
to a nearly 225-acre farm that includes the retail marketing
of more than 20 varieties of crops. In 2001 they will begin
their first year of offering agricultural education sessions
to students in grades K-4. Students will learn about the many
steps taken in the field preparation, planting,. growing and
harvesting of the Jersey Fresh vegetables produced at the
farm: arugula, cabbage, cilantro, eggplant, herbs, lettuce,
melons, squash, and tomatoes. The Muzzarelli's have devised
a scavenger hunt through a corn and straw maze that will test
students' abilities to adapt their movement skills. At the
conclusion of the hunt, students will be given a questionnaire
to complete that will help demonstrate their ability to gain
information from a variety of media. When the session is complete,
students can eat their lunch or snacks at the farm's outdoor
picnic facility. Muzzarelli's retail market was honored by
the Vineland's Daily Journal in 1995 and 2000 with their "Best
of the Best Award," and they are confident that you will be
pleased with the lesson plans they have developed for the
students who have an opportunity to visit their family farm
operation.
