Take
a Farm Trail Through the Meadows and Woods
Since 1976, Terhune Orchards has offered agricultural education
sessions to students in grades K-12. With 225 acres actively
devoted to agriculture, Terhune is preserved under the farmland
preservation program and will be a farm in perpetuity; no
houses will ever be built on its precious soils. Terhune's
mission is for each farm visitor to have an enjoyable experience
and leave the farm with a better understanding of how food
reaches their kitchen table, an awareness of the outdoor world,
a basic understanding of apple production, and an appreciation
for the diversity necessary for a family farm to survive.
The farm was one of the first to construct a special storage
facility to handle the farm chemicals, and it also uses a
program called Integrated Pest Management to reduce chemical
use to the smallest amount possible in the production of quality
food. Students have the opportunity to follow the farm trail
(nature trail) through meadows, apple orchards, fields and
woods where they will learn about natural resource management,
conservation techniques, sustainable agriculture, fruit and
vegetable production, and cider processing. Terhune also allows
students to see first-hand both domestic and semi-permanent
wild water fowl, sheep, goats, a pony, a rabbit and the traditional
farm cat and dogs.
