Visiting
a Working Farm is Fun and Educational
The Von Thun family has been offering agricultural educational
sessions since 1987 so students can get hands-on learning
about the many facets of agriculture, the food system and
natural resource management. The fourth generation of Von
Thuns operated the 140-acre flower and vegetable farm that
had its start in 1913. Bob was chosen as one of the four National
Outstanding Young Farmers for 2001, and Cindy is a certified
agricultural education instructor. With this in mind, you
will find the Von Thun's educational sessions to be both enjoyable
and informative. Throughout the hayride, students will learn
about the farm and the wide variety of crops growing in season,
such as pick-your-own strawberries and pumpkins. Students
will have an opportunity to learn about farm animals, and
educators will watch in amazement as their students' eyes
light up when they see and touch baby farm animals for the
first time. The educational sessions held in the 15,000 square
foot greenhouse include the visitors having an opportunity
to pot their very own plant and learn how to nurture the plant
so it will grow strong. Activities on the farm that will test
the students' motor skills include the corn maze, the moon
jump and the tricycle- peddling course. You can also make
arrangements with Von Thun Farms to use the picnic area at
the end of your session so the students can mingle and talk
about all the things they saw, the farm aromas they experienced
and the new information they learned regarding agriculture
in New Jersey. Students will be exposed to an environment
they will never forget.
