New Jersey Homeland Security Website
The $82 billion New Jersey food and agriculture industry is the third largest industry in the state. As animals, animal products, horticulture and food products move over longer distances at a quicker pace, the chances for the spread of disease also increase. One incident of agro-terrorism in certain crops or livestock products can result in great losses of life, consumer distrust, and economic losses, not only to the industry but also to the state.
In order to help keep New Jersey farms, and food products they produce, safe and secure the New Jersey Department of Agriculture is working with the farmers, producers, growers, breeders, and a host of other experts. Together, they actively participate in disease/pest surveillance and laboratory sampling. In addition, they have developed a number of Best Management Practices to help “Keep The Garden State Safe.”
It is up to all of us to incorporated biosecurity and security practices into our daily lives and into the work that we perform.
