Agriculture Secretary Art Brown, Jr., today urged operators of homeless shelters in New Jersey to contact NJDA's Bureau of Child Nutrition for information about a new program through which shelters can be reimbursed for meals and snacks provided to resident children. The new program takes effect July 1, 1999.

The federal Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act of 1998 expanded benefits available under the Child and Adult Food Program (CAFP) to include children under 12 in emergency shelters that provide temporary housing for children and their families. The goal of the legislation is to provide children residing in emergency shelters with year-round access to nutritious meals and snacks.

For more information, shelter operators should contact the Bureau of Child Nutrition at 609-984-1250.
