Apr-15-08 DCA Extends Deadline for LIHEAP
DCA Extends Deadline for LIHEAP |
TRENTON, N.J. – New Jersey Department of Community Affairs’ (DCA) Commissioner Joseph Doria today announced that the deadline for which New Jersey residents can apply for regular Low Income Heating and Energy Assistance Benefits will be extended to April 30th. The deadline for LIHEAP application submissions had originally been extended from March 31st until April 15th.
“At this time, when there is such a high cost for energy, LIHEAP is crucial to providing low-income families with much needed home energy assistance,” said DCA Commissioner Joseph Doria. “We are extending the application deadline so that more New Jersey residents will take advantage of this important opportunity.”
Individuals are urged to apply as soon as possible, as it takes approximately 4-6 weeks to process a properly completed application. This year, the maximum annual benefit was increased from $1400 to $2000. The maximum emergency assistance benefit was increased from $800 to $1,000. Those interested in applying for LIHEAP assistance can call 1-800-510-3102 or reach out to their local application agency (see attached list).
LIHEAP is designed to help low-income families and individuals meet home heating and medically necessary cooling costs and provides low-income households with money to help pay their winter heating bills. LIHEAP funding is provided through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and is administered through the DCA’s Division of Community Resources.
