Christie Administration Announces Assistance for Homeowners Struggling with Mortgage Payments
New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency to Host Free Outreach Events for Homeowners at Risk of Foreclosure

TRENTON, N.J. – New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Commissioner Richard E. Constable, III today announced that the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency (HMFA) will receive $197,802 from the federal Making Home Affordable program to host a series of free outreach events for homeowners who are seeking assistance to avoid foreclosure.

“The Making Home Affordable program is aimed at providing qualified homeowners with the opportunity to reduce mortgage payments to affordable levels,” said Commissioner Constable, who chairs the HMFA Board. “We are pleased to participate in this program and help families facing foreclosure find the right solution to their situation.”

Since its launch in 2009, Making Home Affordable has expanded the number of specialized programs that are available to homeowners, and many homeowners that did not previously meet program guidelines may currently be eligible under expanded program criteria.

As part of the HMFA’s outreach efforts, it will host a series of free foreclosure assistance events in six of the hardest hit counties across New Jersey. These events will give homeowners the ability to meet one-on-one with a housing counselor certified by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to explore options such as loan reinstatement, loan modification, and/or refinance to help avoid foreclosure.

“If people are struggling to make mortgage payments or have fallen behind, they should not wait until it is too late,” said HMFA Executive Director Anthony Marchetta.  “We urge them to attend one of these free events and let our team of HUD-certified housing counselors evaluate their situation and discover which programs they may be eligible for.”
