Bayonne’s Nicholas Oresko School Prevails in State Fire Safety Competition

TRENTON – The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs’ Division of Fire Safety today announced that the student team from the Nicholas Oresko School of Bayonne secured the crown of state champions defeating the Dwight D. Eisenhower School of Freehold during the 12th annual Fire Information and Rescue Education Bowl (F.I.R.E. Bowl) held recently on the campus of Kean University.

The F.I.R.E. Bowl is open to 7th and 8th grade students throughout the state, many of whom received their last instruction about fire safety as toddlers. As a community risk reduction effort, it seeks to educate its participants in the ways to keep themselves safe from fire.

The F.I.R.E. Bowl is a fun way to revisit childhood fire safety training. The students also go deeper into aspects of fire science, fire service history and the increasing Emergency Medical Services (EMS) component of firefighter training. In fact, the knowledge base the students are expected to learn comes directly from the New Jersey firefighter training manual.

“We are continually amazed at the level of participation our student scholars bring to our competition each year,” said Louis Kilmer, Acting State Fire Marshal of the New Jersey Division of Fire Safety. “It appeals across-the-board to the students, their instructor coaches, school officials, and parents, all of whom get an important update on information that may, in fact, save their lives.”

Kilmer notes that the F.I.R.E. Bowl, the creation of former Division Director Lawrence Petrillo, has received national attention from the International Association of State Fire Marshals and National Fire Protection Association.
