TRENTON, NJ – New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) Commissioner, Lieutenant Governor Sheila Y. Oliver, today announced that Governor Phil Murphy will headline the 2018 Governor’s Conference on Housing and Economic Development. The conference takes place on Tuesday, October 2 and Wednesday, October 3 at the Harrah’s Waterfront Conference Center in Atlantic City. 

“I am thrilled to announce Governor Murphy as they keynote speaker at the upcoming Governor’s Conference on Housing and Economic Development in October. Our administration is focused on building a fairer and stronger New Jersey and it is truly a new day for housing and economic development in this State,” said Oliver.  ‘We look forward to collaborating and discussing innovative solutions that will help revive our Main Streets, create jobs and provide much needed affordable housing opportunities for New Jersey residents.  From Neighborhood Preservation Programs to Main Street New Jersey, The Department of Community Affairs will be engaging municipalities across the State to share their positive ideas for revitalizing declining neighborhoods. Working together, we can accomplish extraordinary things in the local communities and neighborhoods where so much of what makes New Jersey great happens.” 

Governor Murphy has embarked on an ambitious agenda focused on building a stronger, fairer New Jersey with a goal of rejuvenating the state’s economy. His vision includes investing in innovation, infrastructure, clean energy, and lifting wages for working men and women. 

He also has made a deep commitment to education, ensuring health care accessibility, and increasing affordable housing opportunities for all residents. 

In addition to having Governor Murphy as the keynote speaker, there are new items that have been added to the conference agenda. To kick off the conference, there will be a pre-conference Housing and Economic Development Hall of Fame Award Reception on October 1 to recognize a pioneer in the housing and economic development field.  The 2018 Housing and Economic Development Hall of Fame Award will be presented to this individual. 

There will also be a new plenary session featuring DCA, NJRA, NJHMFA, and NJEDA that will focus on the Governor’s priority to build an innovation economy in New Jersey and the role that redevelopment, housing, and economic growth will play in this effort to put New Jersey on the path to a stronger and fairer economy. 

Additionally, new break-out session topics and a new track on the Fair Housing Act will complement 25 sessions in six tracks led by some of the state’s most distinguished business, economic development and housing professionals.    

On October 2, attendees that participate in the Atlantic City Bus Tour will see firsthand the exciting examples of business and neighborhood revitalization efforts being made in the city.  

The Housing and Economic Development Awards Luncheon will take place on October 3 where the NJ Department of Community Affairs, New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency and New Jersey Economic Development Authority will recognize the most outstanding housing and economic development projects and partnerships throughout New Jersey. The winning categories this year are Leading Housing Development, Leading Supportive Housing Development, and Leading Economic Development Partnership. 

Other conference highlights include a networking reception and a trade show featuring products and services from businesses and organizations that serve the housing and property management community. 

The NJ Governor’s Conference for Housing and Economic Development is hosted by the Department of Community Affairs, the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency and the New Jersey Economic Development Authority.
