The Preserve New Jersey Historic Preservation Fund was established by legislation in 2016 to provide an annual source of matching grants from the state’s corporate business tax for historic preservation projects. The Preserve New Jersey Fund continues the work of the Garden State Historic Preservation Trust Fund (2000-2012) and the Historic Preservation Bond Program (1990-1997). Since 1990, more than $145 million in matching grants has been awarded to worthy historic preservation construction and planning projects throughout the state.
In November 2014, New Jersey voters approved a change to the state constitution to provide a stable source of funding for open space, farmland, and historic preservation by dedicating funds from the Corporate Business Tax.
The implementing legislation (S2456) was passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor in June 2016. The legislation defines the percentage of funding for the Historic Preservation Fund at 5 percent (likely between $3 and 4 million in available grant funds each year). However, the specific amount of available funding each year will be determined upon the resolution of that year's budget.
The 2021 Preserve New Jersey grant round is now open! Applications are due no later than 4:00pm on Thursday, April 29, 2021. For the 2021 round, the Trust will be offering Capital, Historic Site Management, and Heritage Tourism Planning grants.

This will help ensure the safety of our building staff, NJHT staff, and our applicants themselves. If you are unable to send your USB via mail or delivery service, we will be allowing limited in-person deliveries on Thursday, April 29 in the lobby of the DCA building at 101 S. Broad Street. You will be able to drop off your USB from 9am to 12pm and 1pm to 3pm. No deliveries will be accepted between 12pm and 1pm. If you must deliver your USB in person, you are required to wear a mask or face covering and we ask that you keep your interactions with NJHT staff as brief as possible.

Each grant type has its own separate application for the 2021 grant round. All applicants are required to submit the online application, as well as a USB with all required attachments by the application deadline of April 29, 2021 at 4:00pm. The Trust requires specific supporting documentation as part of the grant application. These documents must be uploaded to a USB Drive and must be received via mail or in-person by April 29, 2021 at 4:00pm. If you are having trouble completing all of the required attachments, please reach out to NJHT staff directly.
Supporting documents must be organized into labeled folders that correspond to the attachment section. The USB drive must also contain a Table of Contents listing all supporting documents on the drive. Please note that the documentation requirements vary slightly among the different grant types offered in 2021--be sure to use the correct checklist when completing your application. On January 28th, the Trust offered a free Applicant Workshop as a virtual webinar hosted via Zoom. We strongly encouraged prospective applicants to attend the workshop to learn about the 2021 grant application.
Overview of the 2021 Preserve NJ grants:
The 2021 grant round will accept applications for Capital Level I & II, Historic Site Management (HSM), and Heritage Tourism grants.
Applications are due by the grant deadline of 4:00 pm on April 29, 2021.
Applications will be available online. Supporting documents will be submitted on a USB drive.
Heritage Tourism projects will have their own separate application.
Multi-phase funding: Applicants will be able to apply for funding for multiple phases of projects. Each phase must be a request of at least $500,000.
Eligible applicants are 501(c)3 nonprofit organizations and entities of state, county or municipal government. Nonprofit organizations are not eligible to apply for projects that benefit churches and houses of worship.
All applicant properties must be listed or certified eligible for listing on the New Jersey Register of Historic Places by August 2, 2021 to be considered for grant funds in this round
