DCF-DOW and provider agencies collaborate to operate abuse intervention or batterer intervention programs with the shared goal of reducing and eliminating the safety and risk concerns posed by those who cause harm. Research indicates that when abuse intervention programs are integrated as part of a community response to domestic violence, it helps to eliminate intimate partner violence by intervening on both the community and individual levels.
These programs are funded to provide opportunities for assessment and engagement, and focus on teaching violence prevention skills, accountability, and responsible parenthood. Abuse intervention programs are currently offered in every county across the state.
The Risk, Needs, Responsivity Model, or RNR, is used by 14 of the 21 DCF-DOW-funded Abuse Intervention Programs. RNR principals focus on providing individualized evaluation, assessment, and treatment to participants. Adherence to the RNR principles has been shown to be effective in reducing general offender recidivism and has been adapted for the domestic violence offender population in many states and jurisdictions, most notably in Colorado and Washington.
