Shawn M. LaTourette serves as Chief of Staff to DEP Commissioner Catherine R. McCabe.
Shawn assists the Commissioner in leading the department, shaping environmental policy and regulation across New Jersey. He is the DEP’s principal liaison to the Office of Governor Phil Murphy and leads the DEP’s senior staff, providing policy advice and direction to each of the DEP programs responsible for protecting New Jersey’s air, land and water, and its natural and historic resources.
Prior to his appointment as Chief of Staff in early 2019, Shawn served as the DEP’s Deputy Commissioner for Legal & Regulatory Affairs, following a career as an environmental attorney. In private practice, Shawn guided clients through the responsible development of infrastructure, energy and brownfields redevelopment projects; litigated high-stakes environmental claims; and defended victims of toxic chemical exposure.
A New Jersey native and avid hiker, Shawn is a graduate of Rutgers University and Rutgers School of Law, where he received highest honors and commendations for his writing on environmental issues, including the legal implications of the Exxon Valdez catastrophe and climate change.Shawn LaTourette, Chief of Staff
