Welcome to the Division of Energy Security & Sustainability

The Division of Energy Security and Sustainability strives to meet two distinct objectives: evaluate and promote clean and resilient energy systems, and sustainable environmental practices and programs; and, protect New Jersey’s citizens from unnecessary exposure from the beneficial use of radiation in medical and industrial applications.

The Bureau of Energy and Sustainability works to achieve the first objective by working collaboratively with other DEP programs, State and non-government agencies, as well as non-governmental organizations, to advance clean energy and environmentally sustainable initiatives. The Radiation Protection Element works to achieve the second objective by regulating the use of x-ray and radioactive materials, licensing the users of these devices and materials, and working collaboratively with the New Jersey State Police and nuclear utilities’ personnel to develop and implement a radiological emergency response plan to protect New Jersey citizens in the event of an accident at any of the state’s nuclear power plants.
