New Jersey’s Electric Vehicle Law, signed in 2020, establishes a goal of having at least 1,000 community charging locations in a town center, commercial area, retail center or near concentrations of multi-unit dwellings by 2025. The latest competitive solicitation issued by the DEP this spring yielded an unprecedented 214 applications for fast-charging stations throughout the state. The 62 dual port fast-chargers will be installed at 31 locations – two per site -- including town centers and commercial areas. Of the 31 locations chosen for the fast-chargers, 16 applicants were government entities and 15 were private entities. Locations that were not selected for this round of funding will be considered as part of the State’s National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Deployment Plan. To date, the DEP has awarded just over $6 million for 1,126 chargers that have 1,938 plugs at 212 locations statewide.

Community DCFC Solicitation Awardees

Leveraging proceeds from New Jersey’s participation in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI), Governor Murphy has announced an additional $10.8 million investment to further protect residents, the environment and the economy from the worsening impacts of climate change. The latest round of proceeds will be used to increase the number of electric trucks and buses that traverse communities overburdened by air pollution and expand the number of community fast charging locations, Commissioner of Environmental Protection Shawn M. LaTourette said.
The total investment of $10.8 million includes $6.9 million from RGGI quarterly auction proceeds for medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles including school buses, garbage trucks, transit and shuttle buses, and $3.9 million for 62 fast-charging stations. The $3.9 million comes from New Jersey’s share of the nationwide Volkswagen Settlement.

Up to $45 million over three years will fund the purchase of electric school buses and charging infrastructure across the state.
Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill (A1282) on August 4, 2022 requiring the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) to implement a three-year “Electric School Bus Program” to provide funding for the purchase of electric school buses and charging infrastructure across the state and to assess a variety of operational issues related to school bus electrification. The bill’s signing testifies to the Murphy Administration’s continued commitment to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, vehicle electrification, and the protection of children and families from harmful air pollutants, especially in environmental justice communities.

The Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL), enacted as the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act of 2021 (Public Law 117-58), continues the authorization of the national surface transportation legislation and appropriates $550 billion for new infrastructure investments. The BIL supports a variety of alternative fuel vehicle (AFV) and advanced vehicle technologies through grant programs, studies, technology standards, loans, research and development, fleet funding, and other measures. BIL includes provisions to increase investment in electric vehicle supply equipment (EVSE), alternative fuel infrastructure, electric vehicle (EV) batteries, electricity grid upgrades, and light-, medium-, and heavy-duty zero emission vehicles (ZEVs).

A statewide municipal ordinance is now in effect that streamlines the local approval process for EV charging stations and requires new multi family buildings, garages and parking lots to be "ready" for EV charging stations. This is another important step toward electrifying New Jersey's transportation sector.

Information for each vehicle includes make and model, vehicle type (SUV, crossover, sedan, minivan, etc.), battery range, price, contract/blanket number, and vendor.

Buying electric vehicles using New Jersey's State Cooperative Purchasing Contracts can speed the procurement process, save money through volume-drive cost reductions, and ensure compliance with the new State regulations such as "pay to play".
