Participants choose two land-based courses from the many offered. Courses include Principals of Wildlife Management, Beasts and Beaches of the Barrier Islands, Wetlands Wildlife, Marine Resources and Their Importance to People and Horseshoe Crab/Shorebird Phenomenon. Participants may also choose one on-water course from the following selections: join a New Jersey waterman on a working cruise in the back bay area behind Stone Harbor; paddle a kayak along winding creeks through the salt marsh to discover the true worth of wetlands; become a member of the crew on the Schooner A.J. Meerwald, NJ's official Tall Ship, as you learn about the history and culture of the Delaware Bay.
Workshop Fee: $80.00 includes instruction, materials, equipment, and meals. You will make your own arrangements for lodging. A list of available accommodations will be sent with your registration confirmation.
Credit: New Jersey City University offers one graduate credit. You must complete the workshop and an independent assignment. The cost will be $253.00 for residents and $414.00 for non-residents. Professional Development Credit will be given through NJEA Professional Development Institute. In addition, the Division of Fish and Wildlife is a registered provider with the Department of Education.
WOW! The Wonders of Wetlands: This FREE, optional workshop will be held on Friday, May 18th from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Participants will receive the 330-page WOW! activity guide which contains 44 student activities for grades K-12, organized into 3-5 day units of study on coastal and inland wetlands. The guides also contain background information, appendices, and lesson plans. You may register for WOW! without attending the rest of the weekend.
Facilities: The workshop will be held at the Wetlands Institute, a modern research facility and education center run by Lehigh University. The Wetlands Institute is located on Stone Harbor Boulevard, just before entering Stone Harbor, NJ. The facility offers easy access to the salt marsh, coastal beaches, back bays, the inland water way, and tidal creeks. All meals will be served at the institute.
Registration Information: The Coastal Workshop for Teachers is open to the first 60 pre-service teachers, classroom teachers, and non-formal educators who register.
