Notes:
Although our data is not conclusive, it suggests the possibility of a growing problem for red knots and, by extension, all shorebirds flying though the Delaware Bay. Data from other sources, including a survey done by the Canadian Fish and Wildlife Service, corroborates our findings.
For each of our findings, declining weights on the bay, declining breeding birds in the Arctic and declining wintering birds in South America, there may be alternative explanations . But, we believe knots are failing to reach the Arctic, resulting in a decreasing number of adults and young. We intend to collect more data to improve our understanding. The question remains: are we running out of time to help the birds?
