New Jersey's State Wildlife Action Plan
Action Development Meetings

NOTE: To access specific portions of the plan, please use the bookmarked Table of Contents on Page vii in New Jersey's State Wildlife Action Plan (pdf, 32mb)

To address the most significant threats and action drivers facing New Jersey's wildlife, we must identify and prioritize specific, corrective conservation actions. The 2017 State Wildlife Action Plan (SWAP) update builds upon what we, the conservation community, have learned and accomplished over the past decade in our efforts to preserve New Jersey's wildlife. The updated Plan reinforces realistic, implementable, and cost-effective strategies that have proven successful in addressing the threats that imperil wildlife or their habitats, while improving or re-prioritizing others. It also tackles newer threats such as climate change and emerging diseases.

Action Plan Meeting The Division of Fish and Wildlife (DFW) collaborated with the Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey (CWF) to host a series of action development workshops (see Chapter 3, Section II-B) (pdf, 32mb) with conservation partners in July 2015. The workshops asked participants to reflect on past successes and present needs as a community, with the goal of developing the actions that will guide conservation of New Jersey's at-risk wildlife for the next ten years.

DFW generated an invitee list (see Appendix L) (pdf, 32mb) with input from the New Jersey SWAP Executive Committee and CWF. The list included more than 460 fellow professionals from local, state, and federal agencies, private organizations, academia, land trusts, and others. Because of the wide breadth of knowledge and ground to cover (both topically and geographically), DFW chose to hold three separate workshops, each centering on a focal theme or landscape suited to the unique expertise or interests of specific participants. The first workshop focused on Policy and Planning and was held in central New Jersey. The second focused on Habitat Management and Land Protection and was also held centrally. The third focused on the Marine Environment and was held in southern New Jersey along the coast.

CWF entered all of the actions generated during these workshops into a spreadsheet and presented them to DFW for further review and prioritization.

Participation from the wide array of conservation partners and action implementers who attended the workshops made New Jersey's SWAP stronger and more comprehensive, and it fostered essential partnerships for focusing our collective limited resources on the actions that will yield the greatest benefits for New Jersey's Species of Greatest Conservation Need.

The formal comment period for the revised NJ State Wildlife Action Plan has closed. We intend, however, to ensure that the Plan is a living document, and we welcome your continued input. The Plan will remain on our website with the ability to accept comments, which will be considered as we continue the process of assessing threats and developing and prioritizing appropriate conservation actions, for Conservation Focal Areas, focal species and their habitats.

Please use the form below to submit comment on Action Development Meetings only; there are separate comment forms for each aspect of the Plan.
Be sure to complete fields that are designated as "* = required".
