Greenwood Forest WMA Forest Stewardship Plan

The NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife is currently working with consulting foresters Pine Creek Forestry to develop a Forest Stewardship Plan for a 3,117-acre area of Greenwood Forest Wildlife Management Area in Ocean County. A forest stand inventory was completed in October 2020.

The overall goals for forest management on state land are as follows:

  • Increase habitat for species of concern
  • Mimic natural disturbance regimes
  • Conserve ecological communities including critical habitats
  • Protect public safety through reduced wildlife hazard
  • Improve growth, vigor, health and function of forests
  • Manage for natural variability
  • Diversify stand ages to achieve a balance of young forest, middle aged and older growth condition
  • Conserve historic resources

As part of the process of developing this plan, stakeholders who have insights about this area and interest in the management of state land will be identified. Stakeholders will include representatives from several agencies within the NJDEP Natural and Historic Resources Group, including: NJ Forest Fire Service, NJ Forest Service, NJ Division of Fish and Wildlife, NJ State Park Service, Historic Preservation Office, and Office of Natural Lands Management, as well as representatives from other outside agencies.
