September 20, 2007
The 2007 Wildlife Heritage Festival, hosted at the DEP Division of Fish and Wildlife's Pequest Trout Hatchery, will feature a Kids Fly Casting Competition sponsored by the American Fly Fishing Schools (AFFS). The tournament, for kids ages 10-17, offers fun and great prizes while allowing participants to demonstrate and improve their fly fishing skills. Winners can possibly advance to the national competition.
The AFFS will conduct the tournament at the festival from 10:00 - 2:00 on September 30, 2007. The AFFS has been conducting local and regional competitions at various sportsmens and boat shows around the U.S. since August, 2007; the competition culminates at the National Finals during Memorial Day weekend, 2008, in New Smyrna Beach, Florida at the 6th annual FISHSTOCK Tournament/ Boating and Fishing Show. Regional winners can compete at FISHSTOCK in a fly casting competition and a fly fishing tournament for redfish and sea trout for prizes and national titles.
At Pequest the contestants will compete by age groups of 10-12, 13-15 and 16-17 year olds with prize winning champions from each group. An overall Junior Grand Champion will emerge from this contest. Pre-registration is recommended to ensure entry - the registration form can be downloaded from the AFFS Web site.
All competitions will be filmed for broadcast worldwide on FLYROD.TV as well as some of the sponsors' Web sites. Cable television viewing will be available of some of the competitions in select markets.
