Conservation Police Officer (CPO) Tracy Stites recently received the Lifesaving Award from the North American Wildlife Enforcement Officers Association. The award recognizes that CPO Stites provided lifesaving aid to an injured motorist in February, 2018.
CPO Stites was off duty at the time of a motor vehicle accident between a mail truck and full size pickup truck. He responded to the accident scene after calling 9-1-1 and police directly. The pickup truck operator was not seriously injured, but the female mail carrier was unconscious and not breathing. Furthermore, she had a large laceration to the back of the head. CPO Stites stabilized her head, initiated CPR, and she began to breathe again on her own. He continued to support her head and talk with her until emergency medical services arrived about 10-15 minutes later.
The victim sustained several broken ribs, a fractured skull, black eye and suffered from bleeding on the brain. If not for his quick actions this mail carrier possibly would have died. The Division of Fish and Wildlife takes pride in this recognition of CPO Stite's quick response and appropriate aid rendered.
