Student Summer Programs
Sedge Island Natural Resource Education Center

 

The NJDEP's Fish and Wildlife and its partners offer teenage students exciting summer programs based at the Sedge Island Natural Resource Education Center, located within NJ's first Marine Conservation Zone. The facility is located just off Island Beach State Park in Barnegat Bay and provides a beautiful location for these unique, educational, fun and exciting experiences.

Sedge Island Field and Research Experience - July 11, 12, and 13, 2022 FULL FOR 2022
New Jersey Fish and Wildlife is offering this three-day program to students going into grades 10 through 12 in September 2022. This program is ideal for students interested in pursuing a college education in marine science or environmental studies.

During this program students will learn about various research methods through hands-on data collection, hear from a local college professor about research they are conducting, and spending time learning how to keep a scientific journal. Research skills learned at this three-day program will be used throughout high school science/capstone courses and within college level labs and research as well.

This program will be conducted from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day on July 11, 12 and 13. Students must be available to attend each session to participate.

Sedge Island Field Experience — July 20, 21, and 22, 2022
New Jersey Fish and Wildlife is offering this three-day program for students going into grades 7, 8 and 9 in the September, 2022. This program is ideal for middle school students interested in marine science or environmental studies.

Over the three days students will learn about conservation while exploring the natural and cultural history of Barnegat Bay through the use of kayaks, microscopes, nets, and other scientific tools. Students will have the opportunity to gather informationabout the flora and fauna of Barnegat Bay; learn about the history of Barnegat Bay through fishing, crabbing, and clamming; and develop leadership skills to improve confidence in making environmentally-friendly decisions.

This program will be conducted from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. July 20, 21, and 22. Students must be available to attend each session to participate.
